What is traditioinal Chinese medicine?

Traditional Chinese medicine is a system of diagnosis and health-care approaches that have evolved over the last 3000 years. The Chinese approach to understanding the human body is unique and is based on the holistic understanding of the universe as outlined in the spiritual insights of Daoism.

This understanding has produced a highly sophisticated set of practices designed to cure illness and to maintain health and well-being. These practice, including acupuncture, herbal remedies, diet, meditation and both static and moving exercises, appear very different in approach yet they all share the same underlying sets of assumptions and insights into the nature of the human body and its place in the universe.

What is Herbalism?

Stretching back over 2,500 years, Chinese herbalism is the oldest continually practised medical profession in the world. Working on the same diagnostic basis as acupuncture, Chinese herbalism works by re-establishing the natural balance and harmony within the body. A herbal prescription will include several herbs working together in combination to treat the person as a whole. It is this individual designing of prescriptions that increases the effectiveness of the treatment.

Chinese herbal medicine is especially effective in the areas of infertility and menstrual irregularities, skin conditions and acute illness such as colds and flu. Herbal medicine can be used separately but is often seen in conjunction with acupuncture. Traditionally Chinese herbs were taken as a drink by boiling up dried herbs. In our clinic we are able to provide the same treatment in powder or capsule form. In today busy world, this is more convenient method of taking herbs, requires no preparation time and is just as effective. We are providing traditional treatment for the modern world.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine pre-sterilised, single use and disposable needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of Qi or natural healing energy. It has been practised in China for thousands of years and approved to work well on people’s health. The doctor will leave the needles in the places for about 20 to 30 minutes to encourage the Qi flow in the energy lines/meridians/channels. These meridians contain our energy flow or Qi”. It is when this Qi is impaired through the body that imbalance and illness occurs.

With the insertion of fine needles at various points on the meridian, the energy can be moved or redirected to where it is needed most. In this way the body's balance can be restored and the illness resolved. The flow of energy can be disrupted in many ways; emotional upset, physical trauma, poor diet or overwork are all common examples. By examining this underlying causes through observation, hearing and smelling, inquiry, palpation and how it has affected the body, the most appropriate treatment for the patient can be selected.

Treating the patient as an individual is at the core of the acupuncture treatment and it this that helps allow the body to rebalance itself Chronic disease, pain control and stress related disorders are three of acupuncture’s specialities in the UK at the moment. It can also help in overcoming additions to smoking, alcohol, food and drugs. Acupuncture treatment is drug-free; you avoid side effects or dependency. It hardly hurts when the needle is inserted into the acupoints. More and more evidences have been found by the scientists and western medical doctors. They have different opinions on how acupuncture works. No one is really sure why it has been used widely in the world. However trial after trial consistently proves it effectiveness.

What is Tui Na?

Tui Na is a form of massage and deep tissue manipulation developed through several thousand years in China to become a highly effective non-invasive treatment. Though relatively unknown in the west, it is regarded as one of the main branches of Chinese Medicine alongside Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine and Qi Gong therapy. Tui Na massage is performed through clothing or without clothing, using various pressing, lifting, stretching, stroking, pushing and grasping, manipulating joints etc massage techniques on the points of meridians and gathering parts of muscles and tendons with fingers, palms, elbow and even heels resulting in a physical and mental relaxing and better Qi and Blood circulation.

Whilst Tui Na is renowned for its effectiveness in the treatment of musculo-skeletal conditions, such as back pain, frozen shoulder, sports injury, it is also effective for internal problems such as migraine, stress, anxiety, panic attacks, digestive dysfunction, menstrual and fertility problems, menopause, etc. Tui Na is an very effective way to keep body Yin and Yang balance to increase the circulation and soften the muscles and ligaments to enhance flexibility and reduce the chance of injury, combat stress and maintain the quality of life. Treatment with Tui Na Massage is available, either on its own, or in combination with Acupuncture and herbal medicine.

One of the side effects of the treatment (Tamoxifen) I received for my breast cancer is severe hot sweats. After 3 months treatment from Dr Zhimin Ma, known as Max, they have completely gone. The treatment also helped with my asthma and has enabled me to reduce my inhalers by half and also I can do more for example 5 miles walks on a regular basis. It has totally changed my life.
